Scarborough Teens Win National School Scrabble Championships

Scarborough Teens Clean Up at Games

Scarborough’s Jack Miner Public school students Jackson Smylie and Alex Li are both Grade 8 students and are the National School Scrabble Champions for 2011. This Scarborough pair beat out 97 other student teams from both Canada and the United States at a recently held competition in Orlando, Florida.

What a great good news story for the Toronto District School Board as it show that our public schools can excel in providing our children with exceptional learning opportunities. This shows that our publicly funded schools can deliver excellence and build strong, thinking students. There are lots of other great schools like Jack Miner Senior Public School in the Guildwood area. Some may not get the attention such as winning a national competition, but many are producing winning students in mathematics, geography, english, languages, team athletic sports, history, music and social sciences.

On Tuesday night past, our Toronto champions got to take their skills to a North American television audience. As guests on Jimmy Kimmel, Jackson and Alex were challenged to a game by the host and well… check out the link to see how they did.
